Rubber Molding
RTV or rubber molding is a molding process typically used to simulate plastic injection molding.
RTV stands for Room Temperature Vulcanization
and is the chemical process in which rubber is cured. In this method a
master model is needed, such as a model build from an
SLA machine,
machined from stock, or another part similar to the intended
geometry.
The master in encapsulated in RTV rubber, after curing the rubber is
then split and the master is removed leaving a cavity. A
urethane or an
epoxy of certain physical properties is then fed into the cavity and
once cured results in a replicated part. Parts from this type of
process can be used to form and fit, and other forms of testing during
the product development process. These parts are sometimes used for
displays and other cosmetic applications as well as prototype parts.
